Hierarchy on Donald Duck

I did the first three levels. I didn't have time for the details, but they're pretty self explanatory. I traced it, because I didn't have time to do a good copy.

Level 1: Basic Shapes
Mainly two hill shapes, and two main totem poles.

Level 2: Major Forms
Nothing strays too far or juts out from the basic tubes of the totem poles. The silhouette stays the same. Back hill is separated into individual mountains. Basic shape of trees established. Smaller totem poles and indians suggested.

Level 3: Sub Forms
Basic details are suggested. The shape of the beak, Donald's hat, arms, legs, hands (no fingers, just the shapes), totem heads are broken into basic shapes. Trees are outlined (no needles or details yet).
Plenty of negative space. Easy to read silhouettes.

Am I on the right track?

George Liquor Pt 4-With Bonus Caricature!

Trying to figure out the different parts of George's head. Outlining all the bits that the lines are suggesting just to prove he's actually made of flesh and blood, not just random lines. I'm learning alot.

I've also included what I believe to be George's basic construction. It's hard to wrap my brain around. Instead of simple circles and ovals, he's a sloped rounded cube.

John, I just got your comment, I'll try smoothing him out on my next one. Thanks a million.

Here's side-view George (I only did his upper body because I'm concentrating on his face). Overlay:

Here's some things I've observed about George:
-He always has a skull. The back of the cranium is long, but sloped and stumpy
-He has a forehead, capable of many thoughtful furrows
-His eyes are bulging, but they aren't floating on the front of his face, they're still attached.
-He has very skinny meaty cheeks
-His neck has alot of extra meat. The neck meat is thicker than the back of his cranium.
-He's fat, but muscular fat. His upper body is in two layers, the second (his belly) starting below his pecs

Irv Spence Pt 1

Here's as close as I got today. Tomorrow I'll iron out the last few bugs. This is the first time I tried overlays (I just got Photoshop).

Here's some earlier attempts. I didn't include the really early attempts because they were too awful.

First attempt: Ugh. Angles are all wrong. Wrong volumes. Crappy hands.

Drawing a Donald Duck toy

I got this Donald Duck toy in a spooky antique shop/barn. The place was full of taxidermied gophers in "hilarious" outfits and exploded goats heads. The photos aren't on exactly the right angles, I know.

This one should be standing straighter.

I'll do some trickier angles soon.

Goofy and Elmer Fudd

I think these turned out pretty good. Copied from the Disney model sheet.

For the incredible Mr Fudd, I drew the two facial expressions on the model sheet, then tried some of my own.

I realize now that I scanned them that the left side of Elmer's skull is too small, but that's easy to fix. I tried to keep the same volumes and proportions and crap, and I think it worked fairly well.

Disney and more Preston Blair (with skeletons)

Some of these will look really overcomplicated, but I did it so I could prove to myself that everything has its own place and logically makes sense. I know I don't need so many construction lines and crap regularily.
I did the grid to make sure I got all the angles right.

Huey, Dewey and/or Louie are pretty darn easy to draw!

Fake Droopy Dog was harder than he looks. Like I said, I added alot of extra construction lines just to prove to myself that everything makes sense.

Attempt 2This wolf was difficult. It's bloody hard to get perspective on muzzles. I dread the day when I'll have to animate them.

The nose is still too fat and the cheek hair are screwy, but I think he looks pretty good besides that.

This squirrel took forever to get right. How are you supposed to construct tails?!?

More Preston Blair (with skeletons!)

I'm starting to get the hang of it. I believe that Mr. Bambi Owl is my best so far. Besides the angle of his head, and some minor details like the feathers, I think it's pretty damn close.

Preston Blair and a Tex Avery Lion

Well I've been trying to copy these Preston Blair pictures as faithfully as I can. Some of them I obviously need to redo to fix the mistakes. Fun fun fun.

Here I decided to get fancy and, after drawing the dog in the book, tried to draw him in some different angles as well. I think I met with reasonable success. The pictures are unpleasantly symettrical, and a bit disproportioned, but ok for a first try. The front view was exceptionally miserable to make, and now he looks like a he should be in a cheesy starburst.

Constructing Bugs Bunny

ATTEMPTS 1 THROUGH 5

Attempt #1. The head's too fat and not on the right angle. The ear is too limp and floppy, the eye's too fat, the other's too crooked, the teeth are too stubby, etc.

Attempt #2. The head's still too fat and still the wrong angle. The ear's too short now, the neck is too short, thin and tilted wrong, the cheek needs to have more meat, etc.

Attempt #3. Everything is too bunched together, not enough blank space. The cheek still doesn't have enough meat, and the body is all screwed up, but it's looking better.

Attempt #4. The head is STILL too fat...it should be more streamlined, but whenever I added the cheeks I screwed it up. The eyebrows at the wrong angle, the eye is too fat and the neck should be straighter.

Attempt #5. Reasonable succes! Besides some wrong angles and some minor volume problems, I think it looks pretty good.

Sorry, folks. The old blog, Holy Shirt Tails, has become hopelessly outdated. Here at the brand new Holy Shenanigans headquarters I shall publish only the most uppercrust of my works. I hope I can delight the world with my new piles of awesomeness.
